Alexander Leo Phillips

Alexander completed his undergraduate degree at Aberystwyth in 2007 with first class honours in Human Geography (BA). During this period he completed a dissertation entitled 'CCTV: Geographies of Place, Exclusion and Self-Governance' which looked at the impacts of CCTV on the contemporary British urban environment focusing on how the technology alters the relationships between the space and its users.

Alexander then immediately began his PhD at the department which is centred around the United States led 'War on Terror'. Broadly speaking he intends on using his PhD to investigate the role governmental and mass media discourses have played in shaping the identities of Muslim-Americans in relation to the state within the context of the 'war on terror' and wider post-9/11 society. This framework is expanded to include geographical concepts such as place and citizenship and the role they play when applied to the geographies of everyday life. Currently in his second year Alexander is undertaking a significant amount of methodological and background research in preparation for his United States based research in the summer of 2009. As such he is currently focused upon the geographies of memory and the role memories play in the construction of individual reality. All of Alexander's research is undertaken under the supervision of Professors Michael Woods and Matt Hannah.
